Perched astride the river Soar, Leicester is home to nearly 300,000 residents, making it one of the UK's larger cities. Surrounded by rolling countryside, the city also lies adjacent to the English National Forest - a perfect spot for walkers. The city itself is renowned as one of the country's most culturally diverse conurbations, with large communities from India, Pakistan and the Caribbean especially prominent. Due to this fact Leicester can offer an immensely varied range of cuisine and shopping from around the world for visitors to enjoy. Leicester town centre is dominated by impressive Victorian architecture, although much new development has sprung up in recent years and more projects are planned, including a state-of-the-art performing arts centre. Shoppers are also well provided for in the city, with several large retail areas and outdoor markets. |
