INDIAN BOSSES- III
This is a condensed version of the report found in SVSR s files, after his death.
Submitted to E.D (A), APSRTC by SVSR DY CHIEF MECHANICAL ENGINEER.,APSRTC ,CUDAPA.
I was appointed as the chairman of the committee to recruit drivers in cudapah division.
The driving test was done by me,and I noted the result against each candidate. In case of candidates who were on border , I took the assistance of other officers to assess and 99% of the cases the results tallied. Each candidate was given two trials, because some candidates might not have performed in the first test due to the nervousness. The vehicle was demonstrated to the candidates to be in good condition ,before and after each individual test.
The honourable board member Dr N.Tulasi reddy called me and asked about the results of the candidates he recommended. The board member who came to know only 3 of his candidates are selected, wanted the list to be kept pending, till he speaks to head office.
The honourable minister for labour P. Sivareddy called me and gave a list of 26 names to be selected as drivers. He insisted that all the 26 should be selected.Minister wanted selected list should be shown to him before publication.
On the last day of the interview I contacted E.D.(o)on phone ,who asked me to
contact E.D.(A).He said that that there is no compromising on driving test and advised the list I prepared be published immediately. On 2nd october 1987 ,we have published the list after working continuously for 12hours.
On 10th october, I was called by the minister. He sent away all the people around him in his room and following conversation took place. He said that officials do not know how to behave with orders of minister.Because of long service I have become termagant and have lot of head weight. When he asked for 26 to be selected only 6 are selected. This looks like a matter of gratis .He used vulgar language about board director. He said that requests are not at all use full with officers like me,only threats will work.
I explained to him that out of 26 candidates recommended ,only 12 satisfied eligibility criteria like height ,education and only 6 passed driving test.
He threatened that the head office will not come to my rescue , if he sends a group of 50 people onto my house.I replied that I believe in god and not in men.
P.S 1.The minister who used to be called "bambula sivareddy", was killed in a dastardly manner in the streets of Hyderabad in a bomb attack.
retribution?
poetic justice?
irony?
PS2 SVSR came to Kavali and stayed here for 3 or 4 days after interviw was over. He told me that he pasted the list late in the night and came off here immediately. He never mentioned the incidents to any body (even to SBD). Gopal found this file in his papers.

Indian Bosses-II
I can certainly vouch for the graciousness of Mrs. Murthy and Mrs Nilekani. As you all know, Mr. Nilakeni decided to leave his stratospheric career for the relative obscurity of an unpaid government job a few months ago. His send-off was a public affair in the sense that all of us employees were part of the farewell ceremony. It was a poignant moment, where this person who has shaped Infosys for all his professional life and knew no other company was leaving.
On stage was the Nilakeni family, including his aged mother. When Mrs Murthy was invited on stage to give a memento to Nandan, she first went up to the mother and touched her feet. And it was not a cursory gesture either- it was a Sashtanga Namaskara, on her knees. She herself is no sprightly kid, after all. And as she came up to Nandan, his wife Rohini, a much younger lady, repeated the same sign of respect to Mrs Murthy.
It was quite something to see that their unimaginable wealth had not diluted their basic Indian values- the public nature of the occasion did not deter them either. It was a good example to give to the Youngisthan generation.
And Mr. Murthy, on the rare occasions that he takes the stage, inevitably receives a rousing reception from the employees- he is ever popular with his troops. Nandan revealed in his speech that it was in fact Mr Murthy who urged him to take up this government role, even though it meant that the company was losing an able leader.
Although Infosys is somewhat embattled nowadays, these leaders will always continue to inspire.

INDIAN BOSSES
Two stories from Rediff of today.
The stories are in the comments section
There were about 70 scientists at Thumba working on a very hectic project. All of them were really frustrated due to the pressure of work and the demands of their boss, not one thought of quitting the job. One day, one scientist came to the boss and told him that he had promised his children that they would be taken to an exhibition going on in the city and wanted to leave the office at 5 30 pm. His boss permitted him to leave early. The Scientist started working and as usual he got involved to such an extent that when he looked at his watch when he felt close to completion, the time was 8.30 PM. Suddenly he remembered of the promise he had made to his children and he was feeling guilty for having disappointed his children. When he reached home, the children were not there. His wife was sitting in the hall and reading magazines. The situation was explosive, any talk would boomerang on him but he still asked his wife where the children were! His wife answered "What a great boss you have! Your manager came here at 5.15 PM and has taken the children to the exhibition and he told them that their father was very busy!" The scientist was dumbstruck! Incidents like these were one of the reasons why all the scientists and technicians at Thumba continued to work under their boss even though the stress was tremendous. Can you have a guess as to who the boss was..?
He was none other than Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former-President of India . . .
Very noble thought.
There is a similar story of a young lady working long back with the Tata's.
One evening after having worked late, she left office and was waiting outside the building for someone.
After completing his meeting schedule, the legendary J.R.D.Tata was on his way out of the building when he saw the young lady waiting. He asked her why she was waiting. The young lady said she was waiting for her husband who was to come to pick her.
Since it was late in the evening, J.R.D. waited along with the young lady till her husband came on a scooter to pick her.
This is the graciousness and nobility of great human beings.
The young lady then was none other than the wife of Infosys Chief Mentor Mr. Narayanmurthy.
This is an episode narrated by her in one of her interview a couple of years back.
Such gestures leave an indelible mark on the human psyche. They are small gestures but have a perennial recall life.
PS: The comments also are truly Indian. Everything is broken down to regionalism.

Finally!
Finally i'm completing my graduation. Done with the theory exams and the project review! WHEW!
Right now i'm a mixed bag of emotions. On one side is the happiness that this is opening new avenues. On the other side i'm filled with nostalgia.I won't be able to sit in those classrooms again, I may never see the 66 faces again...
If these aspects are two ends of the see-saw the fulcrum is responsibility. In life, till date i have never been conferred ultimate responsibility.Be it a technical festival in college or a campus interview job, the responsibility was just operating responsibility(I had people to answer to all the time).
I am now at that point in life, where I can shirk no more from it.The time has come for me to fly but i'm still not prepared for it. I don't want to come out from under the protective wings!Finally...i know the time has come for me to start behaving like a mature adult...
(i)I have to get rid of my laziness!! [After spending 8 hrs in front of thr computer in college, I usually hate sitting with the pc at home....but if i do not cultivate this habit, I cannot stay in touch with family :-( .... I'm starting right here! Hi... pedanannas - naasimha pdn, ranganadham pdn ; pedammas - bhargavi pdm, gouri pdm, durga pdm ; viswam babai, padma pinni, saradatta, ram mohan mama, brothers - krupakar anna, sasanna, seenanna, kanthanna ; akkas - kuppakka, vidyakka ; chellis - manasa, sumana, swathi ; dear vadinas - poonam, madhurima, sudha ; bavagarulu - seenu bava, madhavan bava and dear aditya... ]
(ii)I have to stop procrastination.Throught my engineering life i've worked on th principle of a rocket...I never started working until my tail was on fire!![Ex:- I've been wanting to post this piece for the past ten days...Imagine!!]
(iii)I have to become more regular in my habits.
(iv)I have to stop depending on dad for anything and everyting.
Oh my god!! This is indeed turning out to be a big checklist...I'd better stop writing it and start doing a few things..
P.S. This post covers only the negative aspects...I have a positive side too :-)...

THE CASE OF THE DEFIANT SON
My mother was chief motivator for her children, unlike my father.
Subbiah (SVSR)should become an engineer.
Narasimha should become a doctor(must practice on Poonamalli high road , Chennai, like other great doctors)
"what about me "I chip in. "You should become veterinary doctor or agriculture demonstrator and look after our lands and animals."( prophetical !!!)
SVSR joined B.E(5 years course ,those days) in Tirupati ,Kotha Veedhi .
He is the son of fierse SRM and loving Kuppakka.
So he is the virtual prince, with scores of doting pinnis and mamas attending over him.
Indiratha who was new bahu at that time, used to push food into his mouth and wipe his lips with her pamita.
After about a week or fortnight of study SVSR came to Kavali one weekend, told my mother that he dosnt want to pursue B.E.
SHOCK AND DISBELIEF !
WHY?
"because I want to read literature"(the ting is in every Singampalli)
There was a big meeting after SRM came home from court.
The persuasion went on for hours but SVSR was adamant.
SRM asked him angrily"then why did you join , if you do not like "
"Nuvvega bodi lectures ichi cheripinchindi"(unthinkable to talk to him like that)
SRM the Durvasa he is ,got wild and slapped hard.
SVSR just ran into the house put his shirt on and ran away.
My mother was wailing, asking him to come back.
SVSR always had friends who "give their life" for him.
They ran after him and he was sitting in fields asking them to go away.
long persuasion by his friends made him come back home.
In the morning my mother asked young GDR who was doing apprentice under my father to council SVSR
He was an RSS man got nice manners and great persuasive capacities.
He took SVSR to our garden, talked with him for so many hours.
In the end SVSR agreed to continue his B.E. and rest is history.

CENSUS 2011 - A GIGANTIC EXCERCISE
Conducting general elections & counting of population work are the regular features of our democracy which require lot of money & man power.Inspite of the lacunae involved like rigging, boothing capturing, bomb attacts , faction fighting ,licquor, money, muscle power in elections ,we still get a fair result on the whole.likewise census work also inspite of enumaration done in the drawing rooms of some enumaretors yields a good result in the end. Any further thoughts ?

FROM DREAMS TO REALITY
Where do great actions begin?if you ask many world thinkers and greatmen, they seem to begin with dreams.it is when we are inspired by the vision of a bright and beautiful achievement in the future that we begin to exert ourselves to make things happen in present.''THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN THE BEAUTY OF THEIR DREAMS.''
When one has a dream, the first step to make it come true is to form an action plan.there cannot be one without goals-both longterm and shortterm.often, people find it helps to keep a dairy or journal with immediate targets to be met,or with more distant milestones one has set for oneselves.''THE ABILITY TO CONVERT IDEAS TO THINGS IS THE SECRET TO OUTWARD SUCCESS.''
Don't be afraid to dream, formulate an action plan that takes both short-term and long-term goals into accounts and make good use of every moment of one's own time.you are then well on the path to success.''THE GRANDEST ACHIEVEMENTS BEGIN WITH THESE SMALL STEPS.''

Birds of Jigni Lake
This is a lake again just about 15 KM from our house. It is a nice setting, with paddy fields, groves and a village all adjacent to the lake. The find of the trip was the Lesser Pied Kingfisher, a spectacular bird about the size of a pigeon. It is known for its fish hunting technique of hovering about 30-40 ft above water and then diving vertically down to catch the fish. We could see the first part where it was hovering stand-still above water- quite something! Apart from that, Poonam was waxing nostalgic after seeing the once ubiquitous sparrows which were in plenty at least in the village. But due to the heat, we could only have about an hour of bird spotting. The list:
Pied Kingfisher
Indian Silverbill
Paddy field Pipit
Wire tailed Swallow
Red rumped Swallow
Bronze Winged Jacana
Common Sparrow (male & female)
Some kind of Lark
Warbler(?)
Ashy Drongo
Common Treepie (heard)
White throated Kingfisher
Green Bee Eater
Spot Billed Duck
Gray Heron
Purple Heron
Small Egret
Darter Bird
Comorant
Some snaps from the web (not mine)

GREAT WORDS
Mahatma Gandhi coined the word "Himalayan blunder"
Winston Churchill used the word "Iron curtain"
I was joking with SRM "you have more love towards you elder sons"
He said " No! No! I have equal dislike for all my children"

ADORING SON
SRM was very fond of his father. He preserved his fathers SSLC register , B.A,B.L Degrees and wedding invitation.
SRM named his first son after his father.(SLN took his grandfathers name and me his mothers)
He very proudly told about the reception and classical concert arranged by SVSR (senior)on the ocassion of his thread marraige.
when I criticized his father about the construction of new rooms on theN W corner of the house (later demolished by durga) against vaastu, SRM defended his father stoutly saying "that was the felt need of that day.grains have to be stored and there were no rooms"
SVSR(sr) was a failure in profession , crash of urbatnat bank affected badly and the property was in debts by the time SRM took over. He has pain stakingly earned back all those properties. SRM never uttered any thing against his father at any point of time.
KIDS OF ALL AGES , PLEASE NOTE .
I donated 2months salary and was instituting a prize in my mothers memory in Jawahar Bharati, wanted to call it singampalli venkata subbamma memorial prize. SRM suggested that it should be SVS memorial prize so that his father will also be remembered.
In fitness of things Krupa won that prize when she was a student of inter and her photo recieving prize was back cover of the magzine(not done usually) at my request.

THE CASE OF THE BIG MOUSTACHE
SRMs clients are mostly from backward taluqs of kanigiri and kandukuru. They come for hearing of the case one day early, sleep in the veranda and attend court next day.SRM sleeps upstairs, singing stazas from bharatham , bhagavatam into late night and explaining the meanings to my mother.Poor women, she used to be sleepy after hardwork of the day and get reprimanded.
We used to hate the cigar smoke, snoring of these clients, but had to bear it.One day one of clients saw SVSR,SLN and asked "are these boys married?
SRM "your face. they are only 13 and 15 ."

Birds of Valley School
Visited Valley School last Sunday AM. This is a J Krishnamurthy school much like Rishi Valley, just outside Bangalore (20 KM from home). They have the good sense to value the biodiversity of their premises, so they preserve it well. It is like a big thicket of trees and bamboo with a stream running through it (now dried up). It is very serene and one can spend the whole day there. Apparently, leaopards have also been sighted there. Needless to say, pretty rich in birds:
