Two years ago, if we had said in public that we had actually played Duke Nukem Forever, we probably would have been hit with furious eye-rolling, gales of corrosive laughter, a punch in the face—or most likely all three. An ongoing joke in the gaming industry for over a decade now, the game was announced in 1997 and has been subjected to one of the most painful and prolonged development cycles of any piece of entertainment anywhere, ever. (It's taken first place five times in Wired's annual Vaporware Awards, and even earned a coveted Lifetime Achievement honor.)But now two things have happened that, even as late as last year, we would never have expected: Duke Nukem Forever has been granted a release date of May 3, and... we've actually played it.Keep your guffaws and fists...

Prices of LCD displays have fallen considerably in the past few years, and it is no longer that rare for people to have multiple monitors. Additionally, even cheaper entry-level graphics cards are now capable of driving multiple monitors. For just a little more than the price of a single 19" monitor, you can now get two 17" LCD monitors, which will give you quite a lot more screen area. Dual monitors can be a much more efficient configuration than a single larger display.Unfortunately Windows still doesn't handle multiple displays as well as it should, despite making strides in the latest Windows 7 version. Windows offers no elegant way to individually change the wallpapers or screensavers for the screens. There are few shortcuts to managing windows across multiple monitors,...

Google Chrome brought with a completely new model for how a browser could work. Tabs that could be torn out of one window onto another, crashes that were no longer fatal, but limited only to a single tab or plug-in.Google Chrome gave each tab and plug-in its own process to work in making sure that data from one could not leak to another and a crash in one tab or plug-in does not bring down the entire browser. Firefox on the other hand can be quite crash-friendly for some people and each crash can bring down all open websites. There are many advantages to this approach, chief among them are stability and security, however memory usage is definitely a disadvantage. While it is often difficult to notice since it is spread across many different processes instead of just one, Google...
